Another thing you might want to check out: On the outside end of the grip is the shiny chrome cap. Said cap is not attached to the grip, but to the handlebar itself (note it does not turn when the grip does). If it is rubbing against the grip, it can prevent the grip from "springing back" by friction.
I agree %100 percent with WD on his suggestion to pick up a cable luber for maintenance, but you might also be suffering from the end-cap friction thing. If so, just loosen it up and slide it out a bit (of course then you'll want to glue it on so it doesn't fall off at 65 mph....) (Guess how I know it can happen?!?!)
